Mohs Surgery

What it is

Mohs micrographic surgery is the gold standard for treating basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, especially on the face and other cosmetically sensitive areas. The cancer is removed one thin layer at a time, and each layer is examined under a microscope on-site until no cancer cells remain. This precision yields cure rates up to 99% while sparing healthy tissue.

Ideal candidates

• You've been diagnosed with basal or squamous cell skin cancer
• The cancer is on the face, ears, hands, or another sensitive area
• The cancer is large, recurrent, or has indistinct borders
• You want the highest possible cure rate

The procedure

Performed in-office under local anesthesia. Dr. Malouf removes a thin layer of tissue, maps and examines it under the microscope, and repeats only where cancer remains. Once the site is clear, the wound is reconstructed the same day.

Recovery

Recovery depends on the size and location of the reconstruction. Most patients heal within 1–2 weeks. Detailed wound-care instructions are provided.
