Botox & Fillers Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable neurotoxin with a long history of safely treating medical and cosmetic problems. The medicine significantly reduces or eliminates deep facial wrinkles by blocking nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. As the muscles relax, wrinkles disappear.
What wrinkles does Botox treat?
As you get older, you develop two kinds of facial wrinkles, static and dynamic. Dynamic wrinkles appear over years of using the same muscles to make facial expressions. The persistent tugging on your skin leads to some of the most visible wrinkles:
- Frown lines (the worry lines between your eyebrows)
- Crow’s feet (the smile lines beside your eyes)
- Forehead furrows (deep creases across your forehead)
- Bunny lines (the line on the sides of your upper nose)
Botox is the perfect treatment for dynamic wrinkles. You still look natural and can make facial expressions because your provider injects Botox into a few precisely targeted muscles.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers do a great job of treating static wrinkles. These wrinkles develop over the years due to exposure to sunlight and natural age-related changes, like dehydration and the loss of skin strength and resilience.
The Dr. Malouf Dermatology team uses Juvéderm® and Restylane® fillers. Both brands offer a family of products containing hyaluronic acid, naturally found in your body, that smooths and moisturizes your skin. When your provider injects a filler under a wrinkle, it immediately plumps the wrinkle, reducing or eliminating its appearance.
Each hyaluronic acid filler has a different consistency that works on specific cosmetic problems. You can use fillers to:
- Erase moderate to severe wrinkles around your mouth and nose
- Reduce small vertical lip lines (smoker’s wrinkles)
- Restore cheek volume
- Lift your cheeks
- Enhance and reshape your lips
- Reshape your chin
- Improve facial symmetry
- Fill in scars
Dr. Malouf takes years off your appearance by artistically injecting the appropriate dermal filler for your cosmetic problem.
How long do Botox and fillers last?
Botox treatments take effect in 3-7 days, and you then begin to see the difference. Your results last up to four months.*
You notice the difference immediately after getting a dermal filler. Your results last six months to two years, depending on the product used and the area treated.*
When your results start to fade, you can choose to get another Botox or filler treatment.
